The first thing to parties bent on roughingit is the selection of a tent, which can behired of any of the sail-makers, for anylength of time, and at a reasonable price.For a party of seven or eight, an eight-footwall-tent, is the best. Dig a trench aroundthe outside to avoid nocturnal baptism thefirst time it rains. The beds can be comfortablyarranged in the rear of the tent, bylaying rubber blankets on the ground; onwhich lay boards slightly raised for the head,and sloping to the ground at the foot. Thesebeds should be placed so that the persons[6]will lie with their heads at the sides of thetent and feet toward the center. On theboards spread straw, hay, or dry seaweed,then the blankets. Every thing used aboutthe bed should be laid in the sun every day.Some prefer sleeping on the ground rolledup in a blanket; but this is imprudent, exceptin very dry localities.
The next important thing is the stove.The top of a common cooking-stove withcovers and stove-pipe to fit, which can bebought at any junk-shop for a trifle, servesvery well in dry weather. Dig out a placein the side of a bank the size and shapeof the stove-top, about two feet deep, andline three sides with brick or stones, withthe front open. Regulate the draughtby placing something in front for ablower.
