Looking back on the method of production ofthis book, it seems to me not to have been somuch a matter of toil as a natural growth. Itseems to have produced itself, for my earliest photographswere taken as records of the different charactersthat I played. These studies, as they were published fromtime to time in the Sketch, Tatler, Playgoer and otherpapers, aroused a certain amount of interest.
Frequent requests from brother actors for me to helpthem with their make-ups convinced me that my instructionwas desired.
As the material accumulated, I constantly heard thesuggestion reiterated, "Make a book of it."
