PREFACE.

The author of this Journal wrote it for hisown satisfaction. When he returned home,he was induced to show it to a number ofhis acquaintances for their information. Several,on whose judgment he could rely, requestedhim to publish it to the world. Hebegs leave simply to remark that he was aneye and ear witness to many things he hasnarrated. He has represented things as heunderstood and remembered them. Otherfacts he obtained from testimony in which hecould fully confide. It is worthy of remarkthat witnesses of probity, in giving their testimonyin courts respecting the same things, often differ from one another as to manycircumstances, owing to their different capacities, positions, and the like. It may be expected, therefore, that some who were in the[4]army, may not exactly agree with the authorin all things stated in this Journal. Let thatbe as it may, he is conscious that he soughtthe most correct information, and that heendeavored to communicate it in a plain, perspicuous style. If he has made any importantmistakes, should those interestedconvince him of them, in a friendly way, hewill use the best means in his power to correctthem.

As to the narratives subjoined to thisJournal, they are short, and he thinks, interesting. He is acquainted with Mr. Davenport, and believes him to be a man of veracity. He had no acquaintance with Mr. Mallarybefore he applied to him for his narrative. His acquaintances will best know what creditought to be given to him.

The gentlemen who gave the narratives,it is obvious, are the only persons responsiblefor the truth of them.

The whole is, with diffidence, submitted tothe candor of a generous public, by

ELIAS DARNELL.
