An author is of necessity a ratheregotistical sort of a fellow, or else hewould not trumpet abroad his nameupon the title-page of a book. If weshould measure this egotism by thesize of the audience to which he hopesto appeal, we fear that the sponsor ofthis little book should make humbleapologies in behalf of his phrenologicalegocentric bump. He who writesupon how to grow fat, modestly limitshis audience to those who, from prideof appearance, or upon doctor'sorders, desire to add to theiravoirdupois. There is a similar modesty uponthe part of those who limit theiraudiences by writing cook-books for thecooks, temperance appeals for thedrunkards, novels for the seminaryladies, war books for the valiant,peace books for the pacificists.
