Preface

To send a book into the world withouta preface is like thrusting a bashful maninto a room full of company without introducinghim; and there could be onlyone thing worse than that,—to a bashfulman,—and that would be to introducehim.

In introducing my book to the reader(how like a book-agent that sounds!) Iwish to say that the only bond of unionbetween the various sketches is that theywere all done by the same hand—orhands, as they were written on a typewriter.

Whether it would have added to theirinterest to have placed the same charactersin each sketch is not for me to[x]say, but it would have been a greatbother to do it, and in getting up a bookthe thing to avoid is bother. It hasn’tbothered me to write it. I hope it won’tbother you to read it, for I’d hate to haveyou bothered on my account.
