TRANSLATOR’S NOTE.

Mr. Louis Nohl, the author of the present littlevolume, has merited for himself in Germany a highreputation as a writer of the biographies of musicians, and some of his larger works have appearedin English on the other side of the Atlantic. Thepresent is the first translation into our language ofhis shorter Life of Mozart. It will, we trust, proveacceptable to those who desire to learn the chiefevents in the life of the great composer, to see howhis life influenced his compositions, and how hisgreat works are, in many instances at least, the expressionof his own joys and sorrows, the pictureof his own soul in tones.

The translator’s grateful acknowledgments aredue to Mr. A. W. Dohn, of Chicago, who was kindenough to compare the entire translation with theoriginal. His thorough knowledge of music andGerman, no less than his rare familiarity with theEnglish language, have largely contributed to thefidelity of this translation.

J. J. L.
