Dante Gabriel, or, to give him his fullchristening name, Gabriel Charles DanteRossetti, was born on May 12th, 1828, atNo. 38, Charlotte Street, Portland Place, and wasthe second of four children, born in successiveyears. Gabriele Rossetti, his father, was a nativeof the city of Vasto, in the province of Abruzzi.He was a man of superior ability and force ofcharacter, and was at one time custodian ofbronzes at the Naples Museum; but having madehimself obnoxious to the Bourbon King Ferdinandduring the suppression of the constitutionin 1821, he was in consequence proscribed andobliged to fly for safety. Assisted by a Britishman-of-war in escaping to Malta, Gabriele Rossettiremained there for some time, practising as aninstructor in his native language, until furtherannoyance drove him in 1824 to England. Herehe settled, and obtained an appointment asProfessor of Italian at King's College. Meantime,in 1826, he had married a daughter of GaetanoPolidori, for some while secretary
