May it please your Lordship,
That Charity and disinterestedCare for the Soulsof Men, which make so amiablea Part of your Lordship'sCharacter, and give a Lustre andGrace to all those worldly Honourswith which God has dignifiedyou, and entitle you tothe kindest Wishes, and sincerestPrayers of all who love ourLord Jesus Christ, and longfor the Enlargement of his[iv]Kingdom in the World; donow embolden me to inscribethe following Narrative to yourLordship, as a Testimonial ofmy Gratitude, for that repeatedLiberality, whereby youhave testified your Approbationof our feeble Attempts inthe important Affair here related,and given your Sanctionto the Plan we have been prosecuting.
And as you have animatedand encouraged our small Beginnings,when we had mostneed of such Countenance andAssistance; so your Condescentionand Generosity have mademe solicitous how to manifest[v]my Gratitude suitably to a Personageof such Distinction.
But as your Lordship couldpropose no other End, besidesthat which we were pursuing,when you thus opened yourHand for our Assistance therein,while it was yet small andobscure; so I may reasonablysuppose, nothing I can returnwill give your Lordship moreSatisfaction, than a plain, andconcise Account of the Progressof it, and our still growing andencreasing Prospects of thosegood Effects, which will be theonly Reward which your Lordshipcould have in View.
