PREFACE.

Visiting a Life Saving Station on our coast, andpassing a night there, I became deeply interestedin the work of the hardy crew. I have examinedwith an absorbing gratification various reports ofthe Service. We may fittingly have a nationalpride in the intent and achievement of this department. The element of the heroic runs throughand makes luminous the pages of what on the faceare only ordinary governmental reports. May theaccompanying story interest our young people inthe work of the Life Saving Service. While theyaccept, make theirs, and build upon the principlesof honesty, reverence, and temperance laid downin this story, may they extend their sympathy andprayers also to the brave men who watch the seawhile we are sleeping, and whose generous daringmay well provoke us to courage and self–sacrificein other spheres.
