[3]THE BIRD SOLDIER.

Little bird! you had better let thatcannon alone; I am afraid you willsoon fall by its side. But what areyou firing at? You don’t mean to letus see; never mind—only be sure thatyou don’t kill yourself, nor any bodyelse.

Can it be that you are doing all thatfor play? If so, you must be veryfond of fire-works. But you hardlylook cross enough to kill any body.

If you do such a thing, you knowwhat must be done; you will eitherbe hung, or put in prison for life: butthey don’t hang much, now-a-days;so, perhaps, they will only shut youup.

Little bird, little bird, what are you doing?—
“Firing my cannon, to kill Robin Redbreast;”
Naughty bird, naughty bird, why will you do it?
“Because he has stolen the eggs from my nest.”

But what is that bird, with acap on, doing? Did he shoot the poorbird? He has a gun; but I shouldhardly think he would follow hisneighbor to the grave, if he was hismurderer.

Tell me, children, if you can, howit was, and who did it, for it looks likea sad affair. Do people ever get intosuch kinds of trouble? They oftendie, and too often kill each other.Learn a lesson from this, never to getangry, lest you some day kill yourfellow-creature.
